The NTA Dark Knight Story
Our history with Dark Knight Rams actually goes back further than the fish we have available today.
Back in 2018, we believed we had received Dark Knight Rams. Unfortunately, the fish ultimately proved to be Black Rams rather than the quality and strain we had expected.
We received quite a bit of backlash at the time because the quality of those Rams didn't meet the expectations associated with the Dark Knight name.
We remember that experience—and we learned from it.
Fast forward to 2022, and we were delighted to finally obtain the Dark Knight Rams we had originally hoped for.
A small number of breeding pairs had previously arrived in Australia, and the Dark Knight Rams offered through NTA today come from fish bred locally in Sydney, Australia.
That history matters to us because we're not interested in simply attaching the Dark Knight name to any unusually dark Ram.

Rams can be sensitive fish, and colour alone doesn't make a quality Ram. Body condition, appetite, behaviour and overall health matter just as much.

Dark Knight Rams transform the familiar appearance of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi.
Instead of the traditional golden body and extensive blue patterning associated with German Blue Rams, Dark Knights have been selectively bred towards extensive charcoal and black pigmentation.
Depending on the individual, subtle metallic blue, turquoise and other underlying Ram colouration may still appear through the scales and fins, creating incredible detail against the dark body.
And underneath that colour is still a Ram.

Care made simple
- Temperature: Approximately 27–30°C

NTA Insight:
We've been down this road before. In 2018, we believed we had Dark Knight Rams and ultimately discovered that what we had received didn't represent the Dark Knight quality we expected. We took criticism for it, and fairly enough, it taught us to be much more careful about what we put that name on. The locally bred Sydney Dark Knights we later obtained were the fish we had originally been looking for. For us, a Dark Knight isn't simply a Ram that happens to look dark—it needs the body condition, health and characteristics to justify the name.

Dark Knight Rams can make a particularly interesting breeding project for experienced aquarists.
Their distinctive appearance and relative rarity compared with conventional German Blue Rams can make quality Australian-bred offspring desirable within the aquarium hobby.
However, breeding shouldn't simply be about producing the maximum number of fish. If you're going to breed Dark Knights, we recommend selecting for health, body shape, fertility, temperament and strong Dark Knight characteristics rather than colour alone.
Producing healthy, well-conditioned Australian-bred Rams ultimately does more for the strain—and the hobby—than simply producing the darkest fish possible.

We don't use the terms interchangeably. Different dark Mikrogeophagus ramirezi lines have circulated through the aquarium trade, and our own experience in 2018 demonstrated why simply calling any dark Ram a Dark Knight can create problems. We reserve the Dark Knight name for fish representing the line and characteristics we expect.
Will every Dark Knight Ram be completely black?
No. Colour intensity and coverage vary naturally between individuals. Some fish become extremely dark while others retain areas of charcoal, grey, blue or turquoise. Age, genetics, mood, lighting and environment can all affect appearance.
Will they become darker as they mature?
Some individuals will continue developing pigmentation as they mature, but genetics ultimately determine their potential. We don't guarantee that a particular juvenile will become completely black as an adult.
Are Dark Knight Rams suitable for beginners?
We rate them as moderate rather than beginner fish. Rams require warm, clean and stable water and are best introduced into a mature aquarium.
Can I keep a pair?
Yes. A compatible male and female pair can make an outstanding display and may breed under suitable conditions. Two randomly selected Rams are not guaranteed to form a compatible pair, however.
Can Dark Knight Rams breed in an aquarium?
Yes. Compatible mature pairs can spawn successfully in captivity. Like other Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, they generally deposit their eggs on a cleaned flat surface or shallow depression and may participate in guarding their eggs and fry.
Are Dark Knight Rams worth breeding?
For aquarists interested in selective breeding, they can be an excellent project. Quality Australian-bred Dark Knights may be desirable within the aquarium hobby, but demand and prices change. We recommend breeding for quality and genetic health rather than assuming offspring will provide a guaranteed financial return.
Can Dark Knights breed with other German Ram strains?
Yes. Dark Knight, German Blue, Electric Blue, Gold and other Mikrogeophagus ramirezi colour forms are the same species and can interbreed. If maintaining the Dark Knight line is important, breeding stock should be kept separate from other Ram strains.
