    Mussels - Nano Tanks Australia

Australian Freshwater Mussels are one of our country's most fascinating native aquatic animals. Belonging primarily to the Hyriidae family, these peaceful filter feeders spend much of their lives partially buried in sand while naturally filtering microscopic particles from the water. They make a unique addition to mature aquariums, native biotope displays and outdoor ponds.

Why You'll Love Australian Freshwater Mussels

    • Native Australian freshwater species
    • Peaceful filter-feeding invertebrates
    • Excellent addition to native aquarium displays
    • Unique behaviour rarely seen in home aquariums
    • Ideal for mature, well-established systems

    Creating the Ideal Home

    Tank Size

A mature aquarium of at least 80 litres is recommended. Larger aquariums or outdoor ponds generally provide greater stability and a more consistent supply of suspended food.

    Temperature

Most Australian freshwater mussels thrive between 18–26°C and tolerate seasonal fluctuations better than many tropical aquarium species.

    Water Quality

    • Ammonia: 0 ppm
    • Nitrite: 0 ppm
    • Nitrate: ideally below 20 ppm
    • pH: 6.8–8.0

Freshwater mussels are sensitive to unstable water conditions and should only be introduced into mature, fully cycled aquariums or ponds.

    Substrate

Fine sand is strongly recommended. Mussels naturally bury themselves beneath the substrate while leaving their siphons exposed to filter water and breathe.

    Water Movement

Gentle water flow provides a steady supply of suspended food while preventing stagnant areas around the mussels.

    Feeding

Australian freshwater mussels are filter feeders. Unlike algae eaters, they rely on microscopic food suspended in the water column and cannot survive on leftover fish food alone.

    • Phytoplankton cultures
    • Commercial filter-feeding foods
    • Natural microorganisms in mature aquariums
    • Fine suspended organic matter

Well-established aquariums and outdoor ponds generally provide the best long-term environment for these fascinating animals.

    Suitable Tank Mates

    • Australian Rainbowfish
    • Pacific Blue Eyes
    • Empire Gudgeons
    • Firetail Gudgeons
    • Purple Spotted Gudgeons
    • Freshwater Shrimp
    • Peaceful native fish

Avoid Puffers, large Cichlids, aggressive Crayfish or any fish that may damage the shell or interfere with the mussel while feeding.

    Australian Freshwater Mussel FAQs

Are Australian Freshwater Mussels algae eaters?

No. They are filter feeders that consume microscopic organisms and suspended particles in the water rather than algae growing on glass or decorations.

    Do they clean the aquarium?

They naturally filter fine particles from the water, but they should never replace proper filtration or regular water changes.

    Can they live in ponds?

Yes. Mature outdoor ponds often provide an excellent environment due to their stable water conditions and naturally occurring microscopic food sources.

    Can they live with shrimp?

Yes. Australian freshwater mussels are completely peaceful and coexist well with freshwater shrimp and other non-aggressive aquarium inhabitants.

Are they suitable for new aquariums?

No. Freshwater mussels should only be introduced into mature aquariums or ponds where there is a stable supply of microscopic food and consistently good water quality.
