Creating the Ideal Home

Tank Size

A single ram or breeding pair is best kept in an aquarium of at least 60 litres. Larger aquariums provide greater stability and allow for additional peaceful tank mates.

Temperature

Rams enjoy warmer water than many tropical fish, with an ideal temperature of 27–30°C for German Blue, Electric Blue and Gold Rams. Bolivian Rams prefer slightly cooler temperatures between 24–27°C.

Water Quality

  • Ammonia: 0 ppm
  • Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: ideally below 20 ppm
  • pH: 5.8–7.2

Rams are more sensitive than many beginner fish and require a fully cycled aquarium with stable, clean water. Consistent maintenance is the key to long-term success.

Filtration

Gentle to moderate filtration is ideal. Maintain excellent water quality without creating excessive water movement, as Rams generally prefer calmer conditions.

Aquascaping

Rams love heavily planted aquariums with driftwood, rocks and shaded areas. Fine sand is an excellent substrate as they naturally enjoy sifting through it while foraging for food.

Feeding

Rams are omnivores that benefit from a varied, high-quality diet.

  • Premium micro pellets
  • High-quality tropical flakes
  • Frozen bloodworms
  • Brine shrimp
  • Daphnia
  • Live foods as an occasional treat

Feeding a varied diet helps maintain vibrant colours, healthy growth and successful breeding.

Suitable Tank Mates

Rams are peaceful and mix well with other calm community fish that enjoy similar warm water conditions.

  • Tetras
  • Corydoras
  • Hatchetfish
  • Small Rainbowfish
  • Peaceful Rasboras
  • Pencilfish
  • Otocinclus

Avoid aggressive cichlids, fin-nipping species and overly active fish that may outcompete Rams during feeding.

Popular Ram Varieties

  • German Blue Ram
  • Electric Blue Ram
  • Gold Ram
  • Bolivian Ram
  • Black Ram
  • Longfin Ram

Rams FAQs

Are Rams suitable for beginners?

Rams are best suited to aquarists with a cycled aquarium who can maintain stable water quality and warm temperatures. They are slightly more demanding than many community fish.

Can Rams live with shrimp?

Adult shrimp may coexist with Rams, but small shrimp and shrimplets are likely to be viewed as food. A dedicated shrimp aquarium is recommended if breeding shrimp.

Do Rams need warm water?

Yes. Most Ram species, particularly German Blue, Electric Blue and Gold Rams, thrive in warmer aquariums between 27–30°C.

Can Rams be kept in pairs?

Yes. A compatible male and female pair often form strong bonds and may breed when kept in excellent water conditions with suitable spawning sites.

Do Rams need live plants?

Live plants aren't essential, but they help create a natural environment, improve water quality and provide shelter, making Rams feel far more secure.
