Biotope: Inhabits slow-moving waters, often with a covering of surface vegetation, also in ricefields and in shallow waters.
Social behaviour: A shy fish, suitable for a community tank except at spawning times when fish become territorial. Do not keep with Thick-lipped Gourami (Colisa labiosa), as they may hybridise.

Decoration: Prefers a darker tank bottom with heavy vegetation along the edges of the aquarium. Driftwood and twisted branches. Leave room in the centre for swimming, and the water movement should be minimal.

Description: The banded gourami has an elongated body, with long dorsal and anal fins. The caudal fin is fan-shaped and the ventral fins are long and slender-almost thread-like. The body is orange-brown with a greenish sheen, and with several narrow orange-red to red stripes slanting diagonally backward.
The back of the fish is dark brown, the chest and belly are blue-green, often with a purple sheen. The iris of the eye may be orange. Females are less colourful, with a white-silver belly region. The dorsal fin on male ends in a point and the body is darker, becoming nearly black during spawning.
For breeding, the water in the tank should be soft, shallow, about 20 cm deep. Water movement should be avoided. Use plenty of floating plants and fine-leaved plants to provide shelter for the female.
The tank should have tight cover, as the fry need access to a layer of warm, humid air, for their labyrinth organ development. For a couple of weeks keep the male and female separated, and feed them with live and frozen foods to get them in condition.
When the female is full with eggs, transfer her to the spawning tank. After 1-2 days put the male to the tank. The male will display to the female constantly, and he makes a large bubble nest.
Male fully embraces female during the act of spawning, turning his stomach toward the surface. 20 to 50 eggs are laid each time - 500 to 600 in all - which float to the surface.
These hatch within 24 hours. Male will jealously guard the nest and female should be removed at this point. Begin feeding the fry with rotifers and infusoria.
After a week or two, the young can be fed with powdered dry foods and Brine Shrimp nauplii.

The narrow-leaf Java fern generally boasts long, skinny leaves, with the plant growing to a height of 10-12 inches (25-30 cm). Java Fern is perfect for those who have limited space or are trying to create an artificial jungle feel in their aquarium. The plants need bright light, but indirect (not right under the light), so they can grow properly.
Keep in mind the sun has a much more potent energy than your tiny aquarium lights, so aquarium keepers can tend to underestimate the wattage and spectrum required. Saying that, in nature Aquatic Java Fern tends to never receive direct light in the jungle river.
So although the Java Fern will be fine with low light in the tank, its growth rate will not impress you.
What You Should Know about Java Fern
It's probably better than any other plant that would grow inside an aquatic environment for this reason - its fronds are big enough for fish to swim through them without getting stuck between leaves.
A striking addition to any freshwater planted aquarium, perfect if you have cichlids or South American fish. Fortunately, it's also relatively easy for plant-eating goldfish and other tank mates to leave it alone because of its tough rhizomes! Java Fern does well in water with pH levels between 6-7.5, as long as the alkalinity stays below eight dKH (aka carbonate hardness).
If you see black spots (or brown spots) in your plant's leaves, don't worry - they do that. Java ferns have veins running through them, and sometimes new bumps will pop up on the leaf from which a new shoot emerges.
Planting and Replanting Java Fern in the Aquarium
Java ferns grow beautifully with other live plants since they are so robust, but they also make a great centrepiece for the aquarium when planted alone. Alternatively, you can attach java fern to aquarium decorations (like rock or driftwood) to create an elegant look that will not overwhelm your fish tank with too much greenery!

Flatworms (Platyhelminthes):To this class of animals belong the unpopular planaria which sometimes massively reproduce in aquariums and then can become a disturbing pest. They mostly lead a hidden existence and appear only at night. After using a planaria trap many people are surprised how many flatworms were present in their aquariums! Since chemical means against planaria have mostly unwanted side effects, the JBL planaria trap is a very good alternative without harmful side effects!Flatworms in marine water:Flatworms in marine water can look very beautiful, such as slugs. But they can also cause problems for corals, when they increase alarmingly and infest the corals. There are Turbellaria which, extremely well camouflaged, even can’t be found on a closer look. This also includes e.g. the Acropora-eating flatworm which can infest stony corals and lead to serious damage. Through an iodine bath of the affected coral outside the aquarium (2 ml Betaisodona/l) the Turbellaria will be paralysed and can be flushed away with a strong water jet. The wrasse Pseudocheilinus hexataenia is considered as the recommended natural enemy of choice, as it can even recognise clutches of worms to eat them.
