The varieties are:
- Mikrogeophagus altispinosus (Haseman, 1911) (Bolivian Ram)
- Mikrogeophagus ramirezi (G. S. Myers & Harry, 1948) (ram cichlid)
Mikrogeophagus ramirezi has the following variants
- German Blue Rams
- Neon Blue/ Electric Blue Rams
- Gold Head Neon Blue Rams
- Gold Rams
- Black Rams
- Dark Knight Rams (This is an all black ram variety)
All the Rams do come in:
- Short Fin
- Long Fin
