The Blue Sapphire Angelfish is a variety of Pterophyllum scalare, which originated from the Amazon Basin, Orinoco Basin and various rivers in the Guiana Shield in tropical South America and are thus freshwater fish. Angelfish distinguish themselves from other cichlids in that they are strong laterally compressed, yet have a round body and elongated triangular dorsal and anal fins. Sapphires grow to a moderate size, generally about 15cm long and can be kept in community tanks quite safely. These elegant yet strikingly shaped fish are popular with both beginner and experienced aquarists alike, and are a joy to observe.
